American explorer, scientist, and teacher who led one of the support parties on Robert Peary's successful attempt to the North Pole in 1909. His success led to a life dedicated to the research and exploration of the peoples and lands that lay to the north. In that vein, he performed ethnological studies of the Eskimos and Indians, surveyed unexplored regions, and studied the zoology and geology of the area.
