The kidney is one of the major exceretory systems of the body responsible for waste products from the body being eliminated via the production of urine. The nephrons with glomerulus as the basic unit of function filters off waste like ammonia,as urea, creatinine,as well as other substances. It also retains useful substances except if in excess like glucose in diabetes. The specific roles of the kidney are two fold.

1.Breakdown and conjugation of such products for elimination as drugs.Biodegradation, though the liver is the major organ for this yet kidney takes care of about 20% of drugs elimination via this mechanis.

2.Production of urine by ultrafilteration of plasma by the glomerulus as well as the renal tubulkes leading to urine production and excretion via the ureters to the bladder.
