Virginia planters were in desperate need of field workers, and indentured servants fulfilled this need. Initially, the Virginia Company funded the travel for these servants, in addition to contributions for food, clothing, and shelter. Later, the planters and merchants in need of these services began to pay for these things themselves. An enticement for making this change was the promise of land.
