Lilith Iyapo is the first character that the story follows. Later in the trilogy she seemingly becomes a lesser character but the characters that become the major characters are all her descendants. Lilith, when she is first awakened, is thought to be perhaps a member of the Earth military because of her behavior. She is unwilling to talk to her invisible captors. The truth of the matter is that Lilith is a wife and a mother on Earth when her husband and small child are killed in a car accident. Lilith is still mourning their passing when the bombs are dropped on Earth and everything is destroyed.
