Johnny is an impoverished, black man, who quits his job at a copper factory because the owners want to shut off his only window. In order to make a living, he now collects dirty and slimy pieces of newspaper to roll into kindling..... each one brings him three cents or a nickel.

Johnny has one son, who he can't afford to buy shoes for, and his wife, Agnes, is terminally ill. Because of Meridian's kindness and acceptance, he goes with her to register to vote after his wife's death.
