The language of Aristophanes, even when translated well, can be difficult for the modern reader to understand. While there is no difficulty understanding and laughing at the dirty jokes and obscene humor of Lysistrata or some of Aristophanes' other plays, it is also true that much of what is going in these plays is direct attacks on figures and customs of the Athens of the time.
