General MacArthur is a tall, courtly, otherworldly figure who seems to float above the struggles of the ordinary soldier. He wears rumpled khakis and chews on a corncob pipe, and is given to such majestic and somewhat opaque statements as, "I shall return." A West Pointer, MacArthur is at once the embodiment of the American soldier and a first-class eccentric.
