Absalom Jones was the black leader who assisted in the construction of the St. George Methodist Church. After its construction, Jones was forbidden to sit anywhere except the very back of the church. As a result, Jones left the church and joined Pastor Richard Allen in establishing The Free African Society. This society provided three-hundred volunteers to care for the sick and poor during the epidemic.
