Jack is exercising his power over the boys. Jack can give or withhold food. Jack purposely skips Piggy. When Piggy asks, he can be even more cruel. Jack is manipulating both Piggy and the other boys with food.

Medza fears his father's reaction after failing his examination, and much of the tension between father and son develops from this pressure.
