Elie is reflecting on the image he has of himself after he's been liberated, the first time he saw himself in a mirror since he lived in the ghetto. The image he saw was that of a dead man..... a corpse, not the young man he actually was, but a man beaten down by experience and made old. Throughout his life, Elie never forgot this image.... the image of what his life had been.
