When Muff Potter was accused and tried for murdering Doc Robinson, both Huck and Tom kept quiet about Injun Joe being the real killer because they were afraid of him. Thus, Tom made a conscious decision to allow Muff Potter to be in jail because he was afraid. In the end, Tom's conscience won out over his fear.... and he told the truth.
