The Little Match Girl is the lead character of a fairy tale that has a sad ending. She is an orphan or a runaway. This unsupervised child is endeavoring to make her way in the world. She has succeeded in doing more than nothing for herself. She has built herself a shelter in a relatively safe place. She has even found a way to bring herself a little money. There is a basic difficulty. Every child who has been taught how to make a good fire and every adult who knows how to do this will not be able to avoid seeing the giant gap in the girl's knowledge. Even though she has found some matches, she lacks the added security of having any fire making skills or a real fire.
