Another theme in the book is the nature of the future. As is the case in many novels of speculative/futuristic fiction, the future in this novel is (in general) portrayed as functioning more idealistically than contemporary society. There is no pollution, environmental abuse, abuse of individuals based on sexual orientation, gender, or race, no rich/poor conflict, etc - in Mattapoisett, the community in which most of the future action takes place.
