Imagery:

I look around. Eyes, hard with hatred, slide from mine. Mouths twitch between leering and sneering.

"All along the coast I saw women in high places, on craggy headlands and jutting promontories, keeping a watch for our passing...I knew that they had been sent there by my mother. Word had gone out to protect me."
