The memoir begins on page 3 with a night sky and stars, with the words in a white box, “For me, the first years are lost” in the middle of the page (3). Pages 4 and 5 depict a large crowd with two black boys with their backs to the reader, looking through a wire fence at the crowd, who all seem to be sitting and waiting. They are all Black people, and the women wear headscarves and some of the men wear head coverings as well. There are many children and babies wearing vibrant colors. The ground is dry and there is a parched tree where some people are getting shade. One boy says to the other, “I don’t see her Hassan” and Hassan says, “Hooyo” (5).
