The Honeycomb cookies are symbolic of connection. Although the cookie box on Sayuri's desk is filled with felting supplies, all five of the main characters react to it. The box is familiar and the cookies are loved by all. The author is also using the recurring image of the cookies and cookie box in order to create another thread between the characters' seemingly disparate lives.
