The language of the novel is simple and straightforward with not a lot of metaphors or allusions. The author is an Athabaskan Indian who received her GED after dropping out of high school. She wrote the book after moving to a trapping cabin twelve miles from Fort Yukon. She would travel to town and type her story on a computer at intervals. The story originated with tales her mother would tell her about her tribal past.
