How does the act of hunting illustrate the theme of life and death in the novel, Tracker?

At its root, hunting is about life and death. The hunter chooses what to kill and what to let live. John chooses not to kill the doe he pursues for two days because he wishes to let it live. His grandpa may not have made that choice, but John can give the doe the chance to live.
