THe imagery is consistent with the setting. All of the scenes in this play are set in a boarding house room. The spatial confinement of the play's events underscores the play's message that topdog/underdog, victim/oppressor or victim/perpetrator relationships are fundamentally relationships that hold between individuals. Since the room serves as the brothers' home, it provides an intimate setting for the interpersonal conflict that drives the play's plot. Moreover, since the brothers' actions are directed at each other and are confined to their home, the responsibility for those actions cannot be assigned to people, groups or entities outside of the room.
