Why do Atticus and his children get such different reactions from Mrs. Dubose in To Kill a Mockingbird?

Mrs. Dubose is an old southerner and she does not abide foolishness, especially from children. She is brusque and taciturn with them. However, Mr. Finch knows how she is and he is extremely polite and cordial like a southern gentleman and she responds to this in a kind way.
