In simple terms, they grow up. Their innocent view of the town where they live and its people becomes less innocent. Both Jem and Scout understand and view the hatred and ugliness inherent in some of the people they've known their entire lives. They learn what it means to stand up for your convictions even if it isn't the popular thing to do. Poor Dill learns that life is not fair if you are a black man living in the South.
