What did Bartle see in Chapter 6 as he and the other men walked on line through the ragged grove?

As Bartle and the other men stormed the orchard, they did not see where the bullets came from when they came. They only saw the leaves as they flicked about and the small chunks of wood and pieces of earth that moved around them.
