In what way is Buddhism a religion of introspection?

The Buddha preached a religion devoid of authority by admonishing his followers to "be lamps unto yourselves." His religion was also lacking in ritual as he ridiculed rites a mere superstitions, trappings irrelevant to the business of finding enlightenment.
