The sanctity of human life is a theme of this book. Early in the novel, the reader learns that Michael ends a serious relationship with a woman because she wants to abort a child they accidentally conceive. He is so destroyed by her wanting to kill that potential person, that he values the child's life over his relationship with the woman. He vows not to ever have another lost child.
