Why do Alex and Conner argue when they reach the mine in Chapter 16?

When they reach the mine, Alex wants to talk about the coincidences between their father's stories and what they have been seeing, but Conner does not. He has another emotional outburst as Alex tries to insinuate that their father is from the fairy tale land.
