Grandma Bailey lives in a cottage in the woods. When Alex and Conner were little, their father would take them to her house and she would read stories to them from her old The Land of Stories book. After the twins' father's death, Grandma comes to visit them for their twelfth birthday so they can have someone to celebrate with. After the usual gifts and foods, Grandma gives them The Land of Stories so that they can keep it for themselves.

At the end of the novel, when Alex and Conner are asked to see the Fairy Godmother in private, it is revealed that Grandma is actually the Fairy Godmother. She says that she happened upon the real world when she was a young fairy and had been traveling back and forth between worlds ever since telling people stories from the fairy tale world to share and gain some happiness from them. After the death of her own husband and as her son became older, she brought her son on a trip to a hospital to read stories to young children. Through this trip, her son became enamored with a nurse and the Fairy Godmother forbade her son from coming with her again as she did not want him to get too attached to the real world.

Once she found out he was going to use the Wishing spell, she had no choice but to let her son go, afterwards marrying the nurse and having Alex and Conner. She is not upset that Alex accidentally broke one of Cinderella's slippers, according to Cinderella; the fairy Godmother fixes the slippers on a regular basis. Before creating a new portal to take Alex and Conner home, the Fairy Godmother gives Cinderella's daughter Hope the gift of bravery. She also turns Froggy back into Prince Charlie Charming as a way of saying thank you for watching over her grandchildren.
