Why does Ada get upset with Jamie at dinner? Was she justified? Explain!

In Chapter 9, Jamie was tired and didn’t want to eat anything but ham for dinner. Ada got upset with him because he seemed unappreciative. She was surprised when Miss Smith then corrected her for trying to force Jamie to eat.

Her reaction is comparable to the time that she tried to tie Jamie up to keep him from leaving the house. She acts like their Mam. She holds Jamie down and tries to force the food into him. Even though Ada is unsure of Miss Smith’s intentions and doesn’t trust her yet, she knows that they shouldn’t refuse the chance to eat good food when it is offered.
