Ada is passionate and determined: her mother is not. As Ada lives with Susan she realizes many of the things that her mother had told her about herself are lies. When her Mam finally comes for Ada and Jamie they do not want to go but Ada feels they don’t have a choice. She decides, however, she is tired of her mother’s lies and confronts her mother. Ada gets her mother to admit she doesn’t want the children and never had. She doesn’t love them and would be happy if they went away. Ada tells her mother she can make that happen.
