Why is Kashiwagi jealous of the marriage between Genji and the Third Princess?

Kashiwagi is crushed by the marriage between Genji and the Third Princess. He once courted the princess and hoped that someday he would make her his wife. He still longs for her, but feels as though everything is lost and he will never make her his wife.
