How does the writer use language to describe the sniper’s reaction?

The sniper's reaction to? Killing his brother? If so, O'Flaherty doesn't reveal the sniper's reaction to the fact that he has murdered his brother. He leaves it up to the reader to draw conclusions and to wonder how, or if, this event will affect the future choices the sniper makes. The last line reads....

Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother’s face.
