The unnamed woman working at the clinic represents symbols of authority. Although her name is never revealed, her recognizable presence at the front desk of the clinic lends her character a sense of authority. Her hysteria and her feelings of fear and powerlessness when the lights go out suggest that authority is an illusion dependent on structures of power. Without underlying structures of order, she becomes just another individual with a life story.
