It is apparent that Matt's father cares for him very much. He has patiently showed Matt how to build a solid cabin. He also speaks of his leaving Matt in a way that makes his love and concern for him clear. Matt ponders everything his father says, and he reminisces as soon as his father leaves. Everything in the cabin reminds him of something his father did or said. They have a relationship of mutual love and respect.
