Who is Arvid from The Settlers and what is their importance?

Robert's best friend, Arvid, accompanies him on the journey to California. Arvid, however, changes his mind about the journey when they are stalled because of winter weather. Unfortunately, when he leaves Robert to return to Minnesota, he never makes it home. Arvid dies after consuming poisonous (contaminated) water.
