Repression is another theme in the poem. In “The Room,” the speaker emphasizes the intensity of the pain involved in the event he is recalling by an insistent repetition of the word “pain.” He does not say, “The scene was painful to me.” Instead, he says, “Pain. The scene was pain, and nothing but pain.”
