In Section I, the introduction of Cass and the reference to her capacity for having visions, which play a role in several later narrative developments, include a reference to the soldiers in blue and gray, the colors of the uniforms worn by the opposing sides in the Civil War. Cass's tears when she sees Noah, foreshadow his eventual, inevitable injury.

The reference to visions also foreshadows Cass's sudden, growing, secure friendship with the similarly gifted Calinda, and the calamitous role that such visions play in the disintegration of the family, specifically, in Chapter Thirteen.
