How did the Viking invasion of England impact its language as noted in the book, The Mother Tongue?

A major change accompanied the Viking attack on England, as well as much of the rest of Europe. In 850, Danish Vikings established a large presence in Northern England, and many words and elements of grammar came into English through its contact with the Danish.
