Why does Geeta's grandfather reach out to Tilo in the novel, The Mistress of Spices?

Geeta's grandfather reaches out to Tilo when the family has a fight over Geeta's choice for a husband. After which, Tilo gives Geeta's grandfather a rather dramatic spice solution to the problem that ultimately reunites the family.
