The city of Liverpool in Northern England, where Luna wishes to escape to after leaving the GDR, is symbolic of freedom. In the GDR, Luna is not allowed to travel freely or make her own plans about how to live her life. Her love of The Beatles leads to her creating a fantasy life in her head in which she lives in their home city of Liverpool and is free to pursue her dreams.
