A cemetery symbolizes hallowed ground, and a grave there symbolizes that the person deserves to have the protection of the hallowed ground. When the funeral is over, Erasmus is to be buried in the cemetery but some people block the way, because Jeanne has spread the story that Erasmus killed himself. That would make him ineligible for burial in the hallowed place and Mr. Clay offers an alternative. When it is proven that Erasmus was murdered, he is buried in the cemetery.
