Significance of the Clasped Left Hands

Jean and Jacques were required to clasp their left hands together during one of their oaths, which was similar to other rituals except that they clasped the left hands instead of the right. The left hands symbolized the hostile nature of their bond. The oaths overall symbolized that each man accepted that God would judge this duel and the loser would be proven a liar.
