Who is Robin White from The Jewel in the Crown and what is their importance?

Robin White serves as the Deputy Commissioner of the Mayapore district. He is the civil authority in Mayapore at the time of the central events, in addition to his responsibility for overseeing the police, as well as the use of the military. White is sympathetic to the Indian people, and he is in opposition to racism and segregation. He does, however, also believe that he has a duty to maintain British rule in a peaceful and orderly way.
