Butterflies symbolize different things at different points in the novel. Mostly, they symbolize a return to one’s homeland, on account of their predictable migratory patterns. Defne insists that she must return to Cyprus—whatever the cost—just like the butterflies that are doomed to repeat the patterns of their elders.
