In the first chapter, we learn that Sheeran’s father taught him to fight. He also taught him it was okay to steal by using the boy to steal crops from other farmers. When Sheeran got into trouble at school, he was punished with a beating by his father. This taught him that if a person misbehaved, they deserved to be physically hurt.
