How does the author use foreshadowing in The Good Soldier?

In Part II, Chapter IV, Ford uses two separate images to foreshadow upcoming tragic events. In the first, Leonora expects Edward to commit suicide and finds him oiling a gun. In the second, Leonora also seeks out Nancy and finds her sitting perfectly still in a chair.
