Who is Richard and April Potter from The Forever War and what is their importance?

Richard and April Potter are Marygay's parents with whom she and Mandella stay until both of them are killed by raiders on their South Dakota commune. Their deaths send Marygay and Mandella back to his mother's, who dies shortly after their arrival.
