Morgoth represents the root of all evil and darkness in Middle-earth. In the prologue, readers learn that it is Morgoth who spreads the darkness throughout Middle-earth. He separates the Noldoli and the Valar through manipulation and lies bringing corruption to the Two Trees. Morgoth is the root of all evil, and his only goal is to create terror or chaos whenever he can. Only by Morgoth’s defeat in the final battle can light ever return to Middle-earth.
