In Chapter Fifty-One, Peter is clearly depressed the first week he is in prison, something the reader finds surprising. Thus, it is not surprising when Peter calls for the Warder and begins issuing demands. This foreshadows a confrontation between these two and a significant development within the plot of the novel as Peter makes a decision as to how he will handle his imprisonment.
