Immanuel Kant is the late 18th century philosopher who understood the world in terms of the absolute, transcendental categories of the mind and who denied that particular things could be known in their essence, which Beauvoir rejects. However, he emphasized an ethic of respect for persons and autonomy which Beauvoir embraces.
