The author uses the color blue in reference to the character of Stella in order to signify the coolness taking over her body as the heat (or life) slowly begins to leave it. It begins as only a slight mention, however, as the novel progresses,Stella becomes more and more obsessed with possessing blue objects and seeing herself in reference to blue. The color blue is a metaphor for coolness, since it is a cool color and whenever blue is concerned it means things are still. Stella becoming more and more "blue" foreshadows her failing health and she moves from being hot to cold. The reference to blue and death are shown when Stella talks about giving birth to two blue children, meaning still-life children, as well as when she references the blue blood in her veins as Luke takes her pulse.
