In Book II, Chapter III, Riumii uses candles as an important symbol for how they function relative to the Sun. While it is true that they are helpful at night, in the bright light of day, their glow is diminished. Rumi also notes that despite the perceived change in radiance, if you put the cotton wool near to the candle, it will still be ignited. The change in brightness does not remove the candle's effect. Rumi advises readers to figure out where they are at and to realize that they will not need a guide once they arrive at the destination of their inner world.
